PARADISE ON FIRE by Jewell Parker Rhodes
Addy is a city girl. She lives with her grandmother, Bibi, since her parents and little sister were killed in an apartment fire. Addy was the only survivor. Ever since the fire, Addy sketches maps and mazes. She is obsessed with knowing how she can escape any place or situation in which she finds herself.
Along with several other city kids, Addy has been invited to attend a camp deep in the forest of Central California. Bibi believes this is Addy's opportunity to find the strength she has been missing since the fire. The first challenge is the airplane flight from New York to California. Addy feels trapped on the plane and anxiously sketches the interior of the aircraft as the flight attendant reviews emergency procedures. Her sketches draw the attention of the other campers who immediately mark her as unusual, not realizing her fascination with escape routes might come in handy.
Addy soon discovers she enjoys the wilderness activities, especially when one of the camp counselors shows her how to make her maps more accurate. Each day she hikes and maps the areas around the camp. Her impulse to view the world as a map will be lifesaving when a forest fire ignites the forest during an overnight camping trip.
Author Jewell Parker Rhodes was inspired to write PARADISE ON FIRE by the Camp Fire, one of the most devastating fires in California history. Her fascination with climate change and the threats it poses for the future also fueled her desire to write about Addy. PARADISE ON FIRE is filled with intense action and gutsy courage.
