THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Rick Riordan is the first book in the Percy Jackson Olympian series. This series has become a huge favorite with my students. Many of them got hooked on it as 8th graders when it first came out, and I'm amazed at how many still comment on it as high schoolers. Some high schoolers even returned to check out the new books as the series continued.
